Due to the expected interest in this area, we had more than 5,000 abstracts published in the last year ending June 30, 2021. It is impossible to cover all aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic and diabetes. Thus, we focused on a few key areas related to COVID-19 and diabetes and chose the following:
- Role of telehealth during COVID-19 pandemic in managing diabetes.
- Digital diabetes and the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Glucose control and the role of BMI in diabetes outcomes and COVID-19.
- Social economic status and other ethnic barriers affecting diabetes outcomes.
By focusing on limited topics in this area, we reduced our total number of abstracts to about 500, and we chose 21 abstracts for this lead article in the ATTD Yearbook 2020–2021. We hope the information we provided in this article is helpful for man-aging diabetes during this pandemic.

The future of insulin treatment continues to be driven by innovation in insulin molecular science, diabetes technology, and efforts of all stakeholders to make the treatments that were initiated by the discovery of insulin in Toronto 100 years ago available worldwide to all individuals in need.
